By pushing the building envelope away from the urban corner, this project is able to provide a more quiet and reflective space away from the chaos of the city. The commemorative program is a space with a series of perpendicular walls guiding the movement of the visitor. This formal quality brings about a level of fear within the person due to the anticipation of a surprise being behind the walls. As a person progresses through the building, this fear alleviates, as does the spacing of the walls. The use of concrete portrays the building as strong yet cold. The project forces people to deal with the presence of death in the building and shines light on the problem of homelessness.
